River Thames, Windsor

The Royal Estate, Windsor Castle was the backdrop for a Rebel Marine mobilisation to assist urgent steel work repairs to a nearby rail bridge spanning the River Thames.

The busy South Western Railway line connecting Staines and Slough had a twenty seven hour blockade to allow safe working on the bridge but meant a very tight schedule.

Using our Jekko SPX532 Spider Crane, which offers a 3,200kg lifting capacity, we lifted in sections of modular Versadock pontoon and built a fully enclosed 10 metres by 4 metres working platform with our usual personnel edge protection consisting of demountable metal panels and post and rope rails for access. This then had a mobile access tower placed on it secured with ratchet straps connected to built-in deck eyes. The spider crane then launched our workboat, Rebel Defender.

Using Rebel Defender, one of our six metre aluminium workboats, the pontoon platform was attached at the bow and pushed from the bankside, where contractors and materials were collected and placed under the bridge. Our four man team then split into shifts to allow continuous cover and support throughout the blockade.

Following completion of the works our team quickly demobilised the pontoon set up and departed Windsor park with minimal fuss, the Jekko Spider Crane, being a hybrid, was the perfect low impact environmentally friendly, specialist plant for the job.
